Our Impact
As a non-profit committed to providing programs in creative expression and mindfulness to communities in need, Theatre Within currently serves the cancer community, public elementary schools and youth in crisis.
Since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, through our partnership with the Red Door Community (formerly Gilda’s Club NYC) and many other regional cancer support communites, we have provided nearly 1,000 free workshops for children who have lost a parent to cancer, adult cancer patients, and survivors in 9 states, Washington D.C. and Canada.
In addition to our John Lennon Real Love Project songwriting workshop, we provide the cancer community with workshops in art, meditation, cartooning, writing and mindfulness, singing, and much more.
The John Lennon Real Love Project for Elementary And Middle Schools
Since the launch of the John Lennon Real Love Project songwriting program for public elementary schools in June 2021, we have brought the program to 19 schools, with more planned for 2024. After learning about John Lennon’s highest values of peace, love and racial/gender equality, students compose their own lyrics to “Real Love” and record their own version of the song with John Lennon’s original piano and vocal tracks.
The John Lennon Real Love Project for Youth in Crisis
For the past two years we have provided workshops in songwriting and art at Covenant House, New York City’s largest provider of residential services for vulnerable, homeless, runaway and exploited youth.
Then Annual John Lennon Tribute
Our Annual John Lennon Tribute charity concert, now in its 44th year, is the only ongoing John Lennon tribute concert in the world sanctioned by Yoko Ono. Over the years, the Tribute has grown from a small neighborhood event to an important New York City cultural event attracting top artists and fans from around the country.
